Editing Statement
First and foremost, after reading a piece of writing, I ask: What is this work of writing trying to do and say at its core? After careful reading, I try to articulate and reflect back to the writer what I understand as the deep internal logic of the work. What is the piece of writing trying to accomplish, and what questions might I ask that will help the writer go deeper into the work? From there, I begin to examine how structure, pacing, language, dialogue, and character might either be hindering or unlocking the work’s full potential.
My thinking and engagement appear in marginal notes as well as a detailed letter, offering feedback that is both encouraging and generative. For more developed manuscripts, my focus shifts to line-by-line attention: rhythm, word choice, organization, and sentence flow, followed by a copy-edit round for grammar and accuracy. After giving the writer time to review the feedback, I offer a follow up meeting to answer any questions.
My approach to editing is to look carefully at what is happening on the page, rather than projecting new ideas or my own agenda. Through attention to craft and language, I hope to give the writer the clarity they need to get back to their creation with renewed energy.
