Teaching Statement
In one-on-one tutoring, my goal is to help students discover their own intrinsic motivation, so that ultimately, they can utilize the powerful tools that give them the ability to express, argue, entertain, and illuminate unique ideas and perspectives. I encourage students to identify areas they want to improve and guide them towards concrete goals such as structuring a strong essay or developing more nuanced characters in their story. Through practice, guided editing, and engaging lessons, I help students develop the writing skills they need for finding clarity and original voice.
For academic writing, I aim to make the process less intimidating and more immersive. Writing is a process, and I challenge students to focus on one step at a time rather than rushing to a finished paper. For creative writing, I recognize that the process is not always linear. Some writers benefit from structure and prompts to get them going, while others need gentle guidance as they explore a messy first draft. I meet each writer where they are.
I love working with adult writers, but I also have years of experience working with kids and teenagers. Writing can be a source of great frustration for many students in school, but I love creating assignments that help younger writers discover their innate storytelling abilities; lessons that show how writing is not something to be afraid of, but a skill that can take them far, helping them explore and communicate their minds and imaginations.
As a teacher and a writer, I understand that writing is fundamentally hard for all of us. The process demands patience, attention, and vulnerability, qualities that our competitive, AI-using world doesn't always slow down for. As a tutor, I value the process and the craft of writing as a deeply human experience.
